in june the days grow longer and the evening lighter and . on Midsummer
ever, light has finally won over darkness -the day more or less never ends.
originally , Midsummer was the holiday of summer and to light. midsummer
is celebrated on the weekend closest to the actual Midsummer day,
june 24 , when the ancient summer solstice Festival
was probably once held.
On an open field of grass, a tall pole is laid out
for people to decorations are alos tied around the pole and from
a crossbar two circles with flowers are
hung . later on all the guests arrive, many dressed in
traditional dresses.
with the help of the fiddler and the accordionist ´s music, the men push
up the midsummer pole against the sky. the celebrations begin !
people join hands and Dance around the pole to
traditional tunes, and many games are played by the children.
the dancing continues later in an
outdoor pavillion with "schottisches" , fast waltzes and
difficult "hambo" , with its thump on the firs beat of the bar and the whirling of the
woman off the grond. after these ceremonies.
people go home and enjoy the Midsummer meal,
consisting of herring and new potatoes served with sour cream and chopped
chives. this was actually the poor man´s dish in olden times ; herring was
eaten almost every day together wth potatoes, seved with soured milk.
the mix of salt, sour, strong and sweet tastes makes it a very interseting cul-inary
experience. beer and schnapps will be seved as well, and tasty strawberries for
des-sert are a must. the table iteslf is ofren decorated with
a Swedish flag and a
lovely bouquet of daisies will be poppies and cornflowers, which are
typical Midsummer flowers picked in the fields.
there is alos a lot of magic going on at Midsummer. for those girls inter-
ested in finding out who husband to-be is, a special trick. if you
secretly go out into the fields and pick seven different
kinds of flowers and put them under pillow, you will dream of you future love.
looking more closely at the Swedish Midsummer traditions, one can see
that they resmble the customs of many other countries. Man´s oldest sym-bol for the
sun is fire, and Midsummer has been celebrated with bonfires all
over Europe. at one time Swedes also dance around a bonfire, but it
failed to create the right effect because of the lightness of the night!
As a result, the swedes imported the Maypole from Germany and turned it into a Midsummer pole to Dance around.
